When Visibility Feels Vulnerable: Showing Up Anyway

Let’s Get Real About Visibility

If the thought of showing up online makes your stomach clench, you are not alone.

For many small business owners in the UK and beyond, visibility feels vulnerable, exposing, and deeply uncomfortable. The pressure to "show up online" often comes with a fear of being judged, getting it wrong, or simply not being seen at all.

But here’s what I want you to know: Visibility is a practice, not a performance. And it’s possible to show up for your business in a way that feels safe, real, and sustainable.

In this blog, I’ll share why visibility feels so vulnerable, how to reframe it so it feels safer, and practical steps you can take to gently increase your visibility without burning out.

Why Visibility Feels So Vulnerable

Let’s start with the truth: visibility is emotional.

It’s not just about posting a reel or sharing your latest offer; it’s about being seen. And for many of us, being seen can bring up fears of rejection, criticism, or not being good enough.

Common reasons visibility feels hard:

  • Fear of judgement: “What if people think I’m pushy or cringe?”
  • Fear of failure: “What if no one engages or cares?”
  • Perfectionism: “I don’t know what to say, so I say nothing.”
  • Comparison: “Everyone else is doing it better.”
  • Overwhelm: “It’s too much on top of everything else.”

Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. And none of these feelings mean you’re not cut out for business or that you’ll never get visible. They just mean you’re human.

A Gentle Reframe: Visibility as Connection

Here’s the shift that changed everything for me and my clients:

Visibility isn’t about broadcasting to the masses. It’s about connecting with the people who need you.

When you see your visibility as an invitation, not a performance, everything changes. It’s not about proving yourself, shouting louder, or following trends that don’t feel right for you.

It’s about sharing your stories, your expertise, your values, and letting your audience know that you’re here, ready to help when they need you.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to show up consistently in a way that feels aligned with your values and energy.

Practical Steps to Show Up Anyway

1️ Start Small and Safe

Visibility doesn’t have to start with a live video, complete with dancing girls, fanfares & a distinct whiff of fakery. It could be:

  • Commenting on someone else’s post.
  • Sharing a quick tip in a Facebook group.
  • Posting a behind-the-scenes photo with a short caption.
  • Sending a friendly email to your list.

Small actions build confidence and momentum.

2️ Choose Platforms That Feel Comfortable

If Instagram stories feel terrifying but writing comes easily, focus on your email list or LinkedIn posts. Visibility should feel possible, not paralysing. You really don’t need to be everywhere. Your audience isn’t.

3️ Plan Ahead to Reduce Overwhelm

Batch ideas or draft posts when you’re in the mood so you aren’t scrambling on the days you feel lower in energy. Having a simple structure like the Stop Posting & Hoping 6-Day Challenge can give you clarity without pressure.

4️ Focus on Helping, Not Performing

Ask yourself: "How can I help my audience today?" This shifts your mindset from "What will people think?" to "Who needs this today?"

5️ Embrace Imperfection

Done is better than perfect. Your audience doesn’t need polished perfection; they need your real, imperfect self. Trust me. Perfection is boring.

Does this sound familiar?

One of my coaching clients, a small business owner here in the UK, avoided posting online for over a year. She was terrified of saying the wrong thing and felt like she had to "perform" every time she showed up online.

We started by working together to create a single LinkedIn post sharing why she started her business and the values behind it. It was short, genuine, and imperfect.

The response? People connected, commented, and she received a new enquiry within a week.

Visibility doesn’t have to be loud or fancy. It just has to be you.

Gentle Visibility Builds Trust

Consistency is what builds trust with your audience, not volume. Whether you post once a week or a few times a month, showing up in a way that feels true to you will attract the right clients.

Remember, people buy from people they know, like, and trust. Your gentle visibility helps them get to know you.
