The start of a new year often brings a sense of renewal and a chance to set fresh goals. But let’s be honest: how many New Year resolutions actually make it past January? For many small business owners, the pressure to set ambitious business goals can feel overwhelming, and by February, those goals are often forgotten. Sound familiar?
The good news is, there’s a way to turn your goals into reality without the stress or burnout. Let’s dive into a practical strategy to set business objectives you’ll actually achieve this year.
Ready? Buckle up & let’s go…
Why Most Goals Fail
Most goals fail because they’re either too vague, too ambitious, or lack a clear action plan. Statements like “I want to grow my business” or “I’ll increase sales” sound great but don’t give you a roadmap to get there. And they are SUPER frustrating for a coach as they are far too vague to help you work on! Without specific steps, it’s easy to lose focus or feel overwhelmed.
Here’s how you can break the cycle.
Step 1: Make Your Goals SMART
SMART goals are: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Here’s how to apply this to your business:
- Specific: Instead of saying, “I want to grow my business,” say, “I want to gain 10 new clients in the first quarter.”
- Measurable: Use metrics to track progress. For example, “I’ll send 15 pitches per month to potential clients.”
- Achievable: Be realistic. If your business is brand new, aiming for 50 clients in a month might be too ambitious – even for a superhero.
- Relevant: This isn’t just about aligning your goals with your big vision, it’s about avoiding the manky photo of a Lambo on your fridge. You need rewards that are relevant to you. If they are not, they won’t inspire you to achieve them. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Lambo or Lego – YOU need to want it to make it relevant.
- Time-bound: Add deadlines. It’s that simple. For example, “I’ll gain 10 new clients by the end of March.”, rather than ‘I’ll add 60 clients by the end of the year’ – see the difference?
Step 2: Break It Down
Annual goals can feel intimidating, so break them into smaller chunks that feel less overwhelming & more attainable. For instance:
- Quarterly Goals: Focus on 1-3 key objectives per quarter.
- Monthly Actions: Set specific tasks for each month to achieve those objectives.
- Weekly Tasks: Create a to-do list every week that aligns with your monthly plan.
By focusing on bite-sized actions, you’ll stay motivated and build momentum throughout the year. This is one of the main ways I help my clients move their business forward – after the big ‘OMG!!’ idea, comes the sensible steps to get it out of your head & into a plan - & that’s where I come in!
Step 3: Focus on Your ‘Power Moves’
Not all actions are created equal. Any Superhero will tell you that. Equally every Superhero has ‘their thing’, their ‘power move’, the thing that changes the game – like Captain America - his iconic move is throwing his shield, which can bounce off surfaces and return to him. Some tasks will have a bigger impact on your business goals than others. Identify your “power moves” – the small actions that yield the biggest results. For example:
- Instead of posting aimlessly on social media, create a targeted campaign to attract your ideal clients.
- Instead of attending every networking event, focus on building relationships with 3-5 key contacts. And for gods sake, follow up will you?!?
When you prioritise your power moves, you’ll achieve more with less effort.
Step 4: Use the Right Tools
