Do you actually have a clue what you’re doing?

Do you actually have a clue what you’re doing?

Sheena Whyatt·17 February 2023

Seriously.

When did you last sit down and have a really long, hard look at your business and where you are going with it? I mean really going with it. Not just the day to day, routine, stuff to get done things that we often convince ourselves is all aligned to a bigger picture, but a proper long hard look at where you are & where you want to go?

As a business coach, I work with overwhelmed business owners who are looking for focus, motivation, direction & accountability – and in every case it is because they want their business to grow & they want help to make that happen the way they want it to.

There are often common challenges to address, like:

  • Needing more clients
  • Needing more sales (the two are not always connected)
  • Needing more exposure
  • Needing accountability

The thing is, I could very easily tell all my clients how to run their businesses the Sheena Whyatt way. I could have a ‘one size fits all’ response to each of these challenges that would be easy to deliver, easy to hide behind & very little effort needed from me to actually implement.

I could do that.

But I don’t.

One of the main reasons I became a business coach was the frustration I had with my own coach several years ago. I really got cheesed off that I’d prepare for my monthly call only to be told ‘we are talking about marketing today’. I didn’t want to talk about marketing for gods sake. I had things relevant to my business right now that I wanted to talk about. My business coach at the time was part of a national franchise and that’s how they did things. When I looked at it, I realised I was paying a frighteningly large sum of money each month to be a member of a pretty generic process that wasn’t focussed on my business at all, only getting me from A-B with a certificate at the end.

I’d gone beyond being motivated by certificates by that stage in my life frankly. I wanted to help small business owners simply do business better – by not only sharing my experience of running my own businesses since 2001 (& trust me, I have made some belters of mistakes in there, as well as some blinding successes), so I began developing how I was going to do that, who I wanted to work with, and started to talk about how what I had to offer would help those business owners get that growth they were looking for.

More often than not, they were lost in a maze of confusion about where their business was at that point, where they wanted it to go, and how to make that what they wanted instead of lots of ‘what you should do’ type advice.

Sitting down and taking a long hard look at your business can be a bit scary. The good thing about coaching is that it isn’t (& should never be) judgemental. Everyone’s business is different, and so is what their vision of success is. Not everyone is motivated by global domination – I’m certainly not, but I am more than happy to work with business owners who are.

Taking a long hard look at your business begins with reminding yourself why you started it in the first place.
