“I need to do more on LinkedIn.”
It’s something I hear almost weekly during coaching sessions. The assumption is: more posts, more connections, more visibility, more clients.
But my response is always the same: “Why?”
Because when you dig into that feeling, it’s rarely about having a well-thought-out strategy. It’s usually about pressure - the kind that comes from seeing everyone else “showing up” and feeling like you’re falling behind.
LinkedIn isn’t about collecting names anymore. It’s about creating a space where your ideal client gets to know how you tick. Where credibility, consistency and clarity do more for you than a bloated connection count ever could.
So stop chasing LinkedIn growth for its own sake - and start using it with real purpose.
The Problem with the Connection Game
There’s a lot of noise on LinkedIn. Sponsored posts. Endless self-promotion. People connecting only to immediately pitch. The old advice was: grow your network. The assumption? More connections = more opportunity.
But now? Bigger networks often mean:
- More noise.
- Less relevance.
- Fewer meaningful conversations.
Connection is only the start of a relationship - not the relationship itself. That’s the shift.
If your content and your profile don’t clearly show what you do, how you help, and why you’re trustworthy - those connections lie idle.
So let’s fix that right now.
What Builds Credibility on LinkedIn
Forget the vanity metrics. Here’s what actually works:
A profile that reflects who you are
- Your headline should do more than state your job title - it should speak directly to your ideal client’s goals.
- Your About section? It should sound like you — conversational, clear, value-led.
- Use the Featured section strategically: link to lead magnets, courses, testimonials, or popular posts.
A posting rhythm that builds trust
- Pick 2or 3 themes that matter to your audience (and you!).
- Share behind-the-scenes insights, lessons learned, client wins, and value-packed tips.
- Consistency beats frequency. Start with 1–2 posts per week and grow from there. You are looking for engaged followers, not connection spammers!
Genuine engagement
- Comment on others’ content meaningfully. Your comments are seen by their audience after all - make them count!
- Respond to people who comment on yours.
- Invite discussion — ask questions and share opinions that matter.
Start With a Profile Audit
A quick LinkedIn health check makes a big difference:
- Headline: Is it clear what you do and who you help?
- Banner image: Does it reflect your business visually?
- About section: Are you showing your personality and your value?
- Featured section: Is it guiding visitors to take action?
