I quite often get asked why KAPOW! is called, well, KAPOW!.
It’s not just about my love of all things superhero orientated (and I’m not bothered if they are DC/Marvel or whatever, I just love all that stuff. Seriously. I do.), but it’s also about my passion for helping business owners do business better.
I’ve been running my own business in one way or another since 2001. September 11th, 2001 to be exact. I was working full time as an IT trainer for a company near where we lived at RAF Odiham, and hearing about the attack on the twin towers, realising my husband was about to have to go off and fight a war, and wondering what on earth was going to happen, made me realise I absolutely loathed my job.
So the only sensible thing to do was quit & set up my own business in one of the most chaotic and dramatic weeks of my life. Which I did. Over these last 20 years I have had some amazing successes, and had some monumental fails. Running your own business is hard work, there is no manual, and there is definitely no safety net when you are the one person in your business doing all the jobs.
I love helping people, and, by combining that with more years than I would like to think about experience as a learning & development professional, led me into business coaching and I’ve never looked back.
I wanted a name for my coaching business that would reflect my passion for motivating people, for helping them be the best version of themselves, for guiding them to create a fabulous personal brand that they are proud of, and for bringing all these skills & talents into their businesses.
I wanted a name for my business that reflected my passion for helping business owners find their superpowers. And for helping them put those to work in their business.
KAPOW! seemed to fit the bill nicely!
But it isn’t just a random comic book word with no relevance to what I do – each letter represents an element of what coaching can offer, or help promote.
A is for Accountability.
When it comes to motivation, it can be a little tough staying motivated when you are running your business alone or just with one or two others. You don’t have a team of colleagues relying on you to push things forward, or a boss we need to impress. What we do have is a shed load of procrastination, over flowing ‘to do’ lists and a real feeling of overwhelm that makes it easier to just not bother.
So that’s it then. Probably time to throw in the towel and go back to the Dark Side and get a job.
NOT.
If you are constantly planning, constantly dreaming, constantly thinking – ‘this time next year, I’ll be a millionaire/part-time/retired/underwater basket weaving, then what you need is a hefty dose of accountability. Like yesterday.
There are three main aspects of accountability:
- Being aware of what you have to do.
- Telling someone (or yourself) that you’ll do it.
- Being open and honest about your progress…and whether you actually did what you said you were going to!
And that’s why working with me through KAPOW! works (if you let it).
Holding you accountable as your business coach isn’t me sitting there each month repeating the same mantra:
Did you do this?
Did you do that?
Why not?
I’m not quite as rigid as that. I get to know you and your business, your WHY, HOW & WHAT, and that helps me paint a picture of how you work, why you work and what your ambitions are.
Yes, I’ll ask you how things have been since I spoke to you last, but accountability isn’t just rattling through a list of tasks – feeling motivated by what you have achieved and then embarrassed and demotivated by the stuff you haven’t. It’s about understanding why you haven’t done the stuff you said you were going to do and working out how to resolve that.
Running your business alone can be tough. I know. I’ve been doing that in one way or another since I set up in business over 20 years ago. Working with me gives you an accountability partner, rather than a professional nagger (although my husband might disagree on that…). A partner who wants to see you and your business succeed. Who wants to see your dreams become goals, your goals become targets and your targets being reached.
